Making a tank cover
Published on February 28th, 2008 @ 04:10:13 pm , using 466 words, 305 views
Decided to make a tank cover just for the crack really, as you all know not as poppular here as in Germany but dont see why that is an thought what the hell. So am gonna chronical my progress here and on me blog, this isnt a how-to as dont 100% know what am doing  , but it will give anyone interested an idea at least.
Got a tank cheap off ebay then went to pay a visit today to East Coast Fibreglass Supplies, to ask advice and pick up some supplies. Nevery been in there before but the guy on the counter was more than happy to help, and everything seems cheap enough so will recomend them. Picked up some Polyeurathane foam and a big tub of filler for the grand total of £15, also stopped off on the way home to get some wet’n'dry 80, 400, 800 grit. All these will be used to make the plug for the mould.
Decided not to do something that covers the entire tank as this would mean using silicone co make the mould and would end up costing about £100 in silicone alone, and as I’m just doing this to see if I can and dont really know what am doing I thought best to start simple. So this cover will just wrap over the top of the tank, with that in mind needed to sand back the area that I was going to use to give the filler a better surface to bond to.
Once finished sanding I cleaned it of with water and allowed to dry. While this was happening started making the shapes to clag on (yes that is a technical term for glue/attach), made everything bigger than needed where I could so have plenty of tollerance to get things right. The great thing about this foam is its easy to cut and can be sanded to shape. I am going for a curvy organic look, as the everything on the bike is curvy and it means I dont have to get everything symetrical (as I’m no sculptor). Here’s some of the shapes I am starting with, but may add more as I see fit.
To attach everthing to the tank I simply smeared a load of filler on the back of the shaped and pressed them into place which worked pretty well. Once the filler had dried is started to add more filler and sand down where neccessary till I got it to this stage and decided to call it a nite.
One thing I learnt was to make sure you dont put too much hardner in the filler
, and to be carefull of where the filler goes as its easier to remove when soft than to sand down  . More to come tomorrow with any luck.
